Romanian Pre-School Children’s Linguistic Innovations

본 논문의 목적은 루마니아 어린이들이 일상적인 대화를 통해서 루마니아어를 그들의 모국어로 습득하는데 과정에서 나타나는 창조성과 관련된 몇몇 양상에 대한 논의를 제기하는데 있다. 먼저, 아동들이 사용하는 단어들의 잘못된 발음과 그 이후의 과정에 대해서 살펴볼 것이고, 이후 어떤 특정한 대상을 지시하는 일반적인 단어들에 대한 지식이 없는 상태에서 새로운 용어를 접하게 되었을 때 그것을 대상과 연결시키는 방식에 대해서 살펴볼 것이다. 본 연구에 사용된 자료들은 1세에서 5세에 이르는 본 저자의 친구와 동료의 아이들 그리고 본인의 아이들로부터 장기간에 걸쳐서 수집한 것이다. 다른 언어를 습득하는 (예를들어, 영어, 독어, 폴란드어) 경우와의 비교를 통해서 어린이의 언어습득에는 매우 많은 유사성이 있다는 점을 볼 수 있었다. 하지만 동시에 여기에는 언어별로 특징적인 점들과 개별 아동들로부터 나타나는 특별한 경향이 존재한다는 점 또한 볼 수 있었다. 본 연구에 사용된 분석틀은 슬로빈 (Slobin)의 발달에 있어서의 공통성과 특수성 (‘developmental universals’ and ‘particulars’, 1985)이다.

The paper aims at bringing to the fore some aspects related to the creativity of young children acquiring Romanian as their mother tongue when they use language in everyday, casual conversation. First, we shall look at the ‘faulty’ pronunciations of their words and at the processes that lie behind them and then we shall move on to the way in which they coin new terms when their lexicons have not yet acquired the usual words for a specific referent. The data employed for this study have been collected in time, from children (aged between 1 and 5 years) of friends and colleagues of mine, as well as from my own child. A comparison with children acquiring other languages (such as English, German and Polish) indicates that there are many similarities in the process of language acquisition among children, but at the same time, there are also language specific features and child-particular tendencies. The framework employed for the analysis is Slobin’s (1985) ‘developmental universals’ and ‘particulars’.
