The Effects of Social Skills and Problem Behaviors on Adaptability of Preschool Children

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of social skills and problem behaviors on adaptability of preschool children. Subjects of this study were 228 young children aged 3-5 years old attending 17 kindergartens and 10 child care centers located Dae-Jeon city and Chungbuk Province. Data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, Cronbach's α, t-test, Pearson's product-moment correlation coefficient using the SPSS 12.0 program, and path analysis was done using AMOS 7.0. program. The results of this study were as follows: First, externalized problem behaviors and internalized problem behaviors were influenced by self-control, interpersonal skills, and verbal assertion for preschool children's adaptability regardless of family types. However, internalized problem behaviors was affected by interpersonal skills of preschool children within two-parents family. Second, internalized and externalized problem behaviors had direct effects on children's adaptability regardless of family types. Third, regardless of family types, the effects of self-control and verbal assertion on children's was medicated by internalized problem behaviors and externalized problem behaviors. The effect of interpersonal skills on adaptability was mediated by only internalized problem behaviors of children within two-parents family whereas children at risk family did not. These finding were discussed the context of the design of program to prevent internalizing and externalizing problem in preschool children.
