Factors Related to College Students' Career Preparation Behavior

Recent economic recession causes the increase of youth unemployment rate and big changes of college students' employment circumstance. In these changes of the labor market, college students are trying to search job information they wish to get and making an effort to have well-prepared career plans. Especially, junior- and senior-year at college are the time for skill developments and preparation to find the suitable job that fit their majors and work aptitude. The purpose of this study are to find the variables which well explain career preparation behavior of college students. The subjects of this study are 499 students of 5 colleges who are relatively close to graduation in Cheong-Ju and Dae-Jeon area. Data were analyzed with reliability test, t-test, ANOVA, pearson's correlation, and multiple regression analysis using SPSS 18.0 program. The result of this study can be summarized as follows: First, career decision-making self-efficacy have a big effect on career preparation behavior. Specially, sub-dimension of career development planning strongly influenced both male and female students' career preparation behavior. Second, female students in humanities and social sciences show a much higher career preparation behavior which may reflect more difficult labor market situation for them. Third, male students' career preparation behavior are slightly influenced by household income-level. In conclusion, different and customized guidance and supports are needed for female and male college students. Based on the findings, diverse measures are necessary for developing career decision-making self-efficacy of adolescents before they enter colleges.
