An Analysis for Determinants of Regional and Local Residential Mobility in Using Bivariate Probit Model with Sample Selection

This study investigates effects of factors influencing residential mobility rates and movement within and outside of the region. The factors considered as main variables are: children's education and turnover; changes in income; and overall consideration of the aging and the burden of housing costs. This study employs a bivariate binomial probit model with sample selection using Korea Housing Survey 2012 dataset. The result of the analysis has shown that the age of the head of the household, the presence of elderly household members, preschool children and the workplace of the head of the household or their partners’ or members of the households’ increased chances of moving. On the other hand, among those households which have moved, a number of characteristics have increased the chances of moving out of the region. Those characteristics are : older the head of the household; the presence of elderly household members, presence of preschool children, higher the total household income and longer the time takes to get to the workplace. From the result of the analysis, we were able to see housing mobility follows the Life Cycle Model of Rossi(1995).
