히스테리 담론‘들’과 담론적 수행성 샤럿 퍼킨스 길먼의 『누런 벽지』

Discourses of Hysteria and Discursive Performativity in Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s The Yellow Wall-Paper

본 논문은 샤럿 퍼킨스 길먼의 『누런 벽지』를 중심으로 히스테리 담론들과 담론의 수행성을 연구한다. 지금까지 히스테리 담론들은 역사적으로 여성의 질병이나 수동성에 초점이 맞추어져, 남근 중심 가부장적 사회가 여성의 히스테리를 보호하고 치료해야할 병리학적인 관점으로 발전되어 왔다. 하지만 필자는 프로이트의 무의식과 히스테리 육체성, 그리고 라깡의 히스테리 담론에 주목하여 히스테리 여성 주체의 욕망과 19세기 사회 문화적인 배경의 한계를 동시에 보여주고자 한다. 나아가 주디스 버틀러의 ‘수행성’과 연결하여 수행적 효과로서의 여성 히스테리를 가정하여 재의미화의 가능성을 내재하고 있는 히스테리의 수행적 담론을 강조한다. 따라서 1장에서는 히스테리 담론‘들’의 역사를 제시하고, 2장에서는 19세기 사회 문화의 배경과 19세기 히스테리 여성 주체의 관계를 보여준다. 3장에서는 본격적 으로 길먼의 『누런 벽지』를 통해 ‘수행적 효과’로서의 젠더와 히스테리를 제시하고, 마지막 4장에서는 헤게모니적인 기존 체제를 재의미화하고 탈맥락화하는 가능성으로 히스테리의 수행적 담론을 제시한다. 따라서 히스테리 여성 주체는 무의식적인 욕망을 반복적으로 몸의 증상으로 표출하면서 전략적으로 수행성을 실천한다.

This paper examines the discourses of hysteria and discursive performativity in Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s The Yellow Wall-Paper. The paper shows the connection between the discourse of hysteria and Butler’s theory of performativity. Like gender, hysteria is performatively constituted by the norms of patriarchic ideology. In the first chapter, the discourses of hysteria has historically been represented as women’s illness or passive one, because it has always been positioned by the patriarch system. Hysteria has been conventionally produced, maintained, and rationalized with musculinist discourses. In the second one, many artists women of the nineteenth century were diagnosed. They were not allowed to have a pen to write something with, because pen-is was considered including to men. The patriarchy deprived women of writing and subjectivation. In the third one, female gender and hysteria have been oppressed by the norms of patriarchic ideology and reproduced as performative effects. Hysteria is shown as performative and oppressed effect through The Yellow Wall- Paper. Finally, hysteria also is the unconscious desire of the hysterical subject to reach Jouissance. So the discursive performativity of hysteria has the possibility of resignification as an alternative reading of performativity and of politics.
