국가적 영웅의 사례를 통해서 본 군 리더십 제고방안 연구

Enhancing Military Leadership

군인들에게 가장 존경하는 역사상 인물을 물어본 결과 대부분 이순신, 안중근, 김구를 언급하였다. 그들 모두 우리가 위기에 처한 상황에서 자신의 안위를 돌보지 않고 목숨을 바쳐 헌신한 인물들이다. 그들은 당시의 상황과 심정을 담은 일기를 썼는데 우리는 그것을 동해 그들의 당시 상황을 엿볼 수 있었다. 필자는 현재 군에서 제시한 9가지 리더십 원칙을 가지고 그들이 구체적으로 실천한 사례를 찾으려고 노력했다. 그 결과 그들 모두 군 리더의 자질인 올바른 품성과 투철한 군인정신, 군사전문가로서의 능력을 가지고 있었고, 그 외 비전과 목표, 솔선수범, 의사소통의 활성화, 결단과 책임, 엄정한 군기, 부하의 능력 개발도 뛰어났음을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 리더십을 가지게 된 근본 원인은 바로 애국심인데 그것은 집안의 가풍과 교육, 그리고 스스로의 실천노력으로 형성이 되었다. 필자는 애국심을 가지고 실천하는 리더십을 '애국 리더십'으로 정의하였는데 그것은 군 리더십 원칙에서 군 특성을 일반적인 의미로 바꾸고, 모든 국민이 자기 분야에서 맡은 바 역할에 최선을 다하면 가질 수 있다고 주장하였다. 필자는 장병들의 리더십을 고양시키기 위한 방안으로 3가지를 제시하였는데 첫째는 역사, 도덕, 위인들에 대한 교육을 강화하고, 둘째는 모범적인 애국사례를 발굴하여 이를 크게 홍보하며, 셋째는 군인에 대한 사회적 존중의식이 무엇보다 필요하다고 강조하였다. 특히 교육에 대한 것은 군 자체적으로도 가능하나 나머지 두 가지는 국민들의 적극적인 도움을 당부하고 있다. 필자는 위 세 사람의 삶을 본받아 군인뿐만 아니라 국민 모두가 진정한 의미의 애국심을 발휘하는 하나의 전환점이 되었으면 좋겠다고 주장한다.

When asked who the most respected person is, military servicemen referred to Sun shin Lee, Joong geun Ahn, and Gu Kim. These people sacrificed themselves for the country when she was in national crises despite their own safety. They wrote diaries about their thoughts during the time, which evince their situation at the time. I have tried hard to find real-world examples of nine principles of leadership suggested by the military that they enacted. As a result, it is known that all three of them had virtuous character, lucid military spirit, and capabilities of military professionals. Moreover, they also had vision, objectives, set of examples, activation of communication, decision and responsibility, firm military discipline, and development of their subordinates' abilities. The root of all these leadership principles is patriotism, which was formed by the traits of household and their efforts to practice. I defined 'patriotic leadership' that can be applied to each one of the citizens to do their best in their fields of profession. As far as I know, there are three ways to enhance leadership for soldiers: 1. enhance education of history, morality, and great men in history; 2. publicize exemplary patriotic cases; 3. social respect towards military. Education is able to be carried independently by the military, but the latter two points require the people's guidance and help. I insist that not only military servicemen, but also all citizens of the country may display their true hearts of patriotism, following the examples of the three great men.
