This study aims to investigate the structural differences of adjectives, such as sure and obvious and to show how they have different complement clauses. Certain sentences used with the word obvious are ungrammatical, whereas others with the word sure are grammatically accurate. I explain why these differences occur by examining the different complement clauses. First, I show their differences in terms of Government & Binding and then on Phase theory based on a minimalist approach, Chomsky (2000, 2001b). Second, I suggest that obvious and sure have different structures: obvious selects only CP, whereas sure selects TP and CP. Based on this approach, I have found that the sentences with obvious do not allow the subject of the lower clause to raise its subject to the position of the main clause whereas the sentences with sure do allow the subject of the lower clause to raise it to the position of the main clause in complement clauses. Finally, I propose that the complement clause of sure is a weak phase but obvious is a strong phase. (Gyeongsang National University)
