A Smuggling Approach to the Structure of the Complement Clauses of Adjectives

The purpose of this paper is to account for syntactic differences in complement structures between likely- and probable-type adjectives based on Chomsky's Phase Theory(2000, 2001b)and Collins's Smuggling(2003b) Approach. In general, adjectives are noun modifiers and can be used with be verbs as predicates. But when they are used as predicates, there are cases in which the subject of the lower clause is allowed to raise to the subject position of the main clause. However, there are constructions which appear to be similar to raising constructions but do not permit a movement of the embedded subject to the main clause. This paper looks into the ungrammaticality of non-raising adjective such as probable. To explain why the adjective probable doesn't allow the lower subject to raise to the matrix subject position and doesn't permit Smuggling, I argue that they have only a complementiser phrase as their complement, whereas the adjective likely may have either a tense phrase or complementiser phrase as their complement.
