This study aims to provide a standard data which may help elite athletes to achieve better psychological state. The study analyzed the effect of perfectionist tendency of athletes on their stresses and jinxes. A survey was conducted on athletes in schools and organizations registered to Korean Olympic Committee. The athletes were sampled separately from individual events (Taekwondo, boxing, swimming, modern pentathlon, canoe, archery, shooting, and triathlon) and team events (soccer and baseball). The survey was distributed and collected in person, with the cooperation from team leaders. The respondents filled out the questionnaires themselves by “self-administration method.” The research findings are as follows: Firstly, male athletes tend to be more self-oriented perfectist than female athletes. Also, athletes of individual events tend to be more society-oriented perfectionist than athletes of team events. Secondly, examining differences in stress, athletes of business/pro teams feel more stressed about negative interpersonal relationship than athletes of middle/high school and university teams. Also, athletes of individual events feel more stressed about weight control than athletes of team events. Furthermore, the longer the career, the higher the stress from negative interpersonal relationship and dissatisfaction at the quality of his/her play. Finally, examining differences in jinx, athletes who have 5~7 careers have a lot of fear about failure. By analyzing the correlations between main variables the following conclusions are drawn: Firstly, only society-oriented perfectionism have effect on negative interpersonal relationship. Also, self-oriented and society-oriented perfectionism affect dissatisfaction at play content. Society-oriented perfectionism was the only factor affecting excessive athletic stress. Society-oriented perfectionism also affects stress level about weight control. Secondly, regarding the correlation between perfectionist tendency and jinx, society-oriented perfectionism affects inner motive. Also, society-oriented perfectionism affects fears about failure. Thirdly, regarding the correlation between athletic stress and jinx, dissatisfaction at play content and excessive athletic stress affect inner motive. Also, negative interpersonal relationship and excessive athletic stress have effect on fears about failure.
