The Region of Dongping, Shuihuxi and Zaju of Water Margin

이 논문은 원잡극 수호희에 등장하는 송강과 주요인물의 근거지 양산박의 역사적, 문화적 접근을 통해 문학 속 지리 공간 수용의 의미를 밝히는데 목적이 있다. 흔히 양산박 영웅으로 알려진 송강과 주요인물 36명에 대한 이야기는 역사적 사실에서 출발한다. 비록 정사와 야사 기록이 어긋나 정확한 내용을 구성하기는 어렵지만, 송강 집단의 활동지역에 대한 역사적 기록은 명확하다. 그러나 우리가 흔히 알고 있는 양산에 대한 언급은 없다. 양산박 영웅의 요새 양산박은 원나라 잡극 수호희에서 확정된다. 이전의 수호 이야기에서 영웅들의 근거지로 태항산과 양산박이 혼재되어 등장하던 것이 원나라 잡극에서 모두 양산박으로 변화되는 것이다. 이러한 배경에는 원나라 동평이라는 도시에 주목할 필요가 있다. 동평은 당시 경제적으로 문화적으로 매우 발전한 도시였을 뿐만 아니라 잡극의 유행지역이기도 하였다. 원나라 수호희의 배경인 산동성 동평에 위치한 양산박은 진태와 같은 문인 등이 양산박을 지나면서 남긴 여행 기록에서 알 수 있듯이 다양한 수호 이야기가 전승되었던 곳이다. 또한 양산박이 속한 동평은 원나라 잡극의 발상지로 거론될 정도로 잡극이 크게 형성하였던 도시이다. 따라서 민간에서 연행되던 수호 이야기는 자연스럽게 잡극이라는 형식으로 무대에 올라 큰 인기를 얻을 수 있었다. 이후 수륙교통의 발달을 통해 점차 그 공연범위를 넓힐 수 있었던 것이다. 특정 지역에서 유행하던 이야기가 당시 가장 유행하던 공연형식을 통해 이야기의 전파 즉 지리적인 확산이 가능하였다고 볼 수 있다.

This study aims to reveal the significance of how the influence of geographical regions is reflected in literature by analyzing historical and cultural aspects of Liangshan Marsh, a regional base for Song Jiang and other main characters of the Drama of Water Margin. The story of Liangshan Marsh Heroes Song Jiang and the main 36 characters is oftentimes said to be originated from the historical fact. It is difficult to perfectly constitute the story as the recorded history and unofficial one do not match, still, the historical record on the regional base of the Song Jiang-led group is clear-cut. There is no mention, however, of Liangshan, with which we are familiar today. The regional base Liangshan Marsh for Liangshan Marsh Heroes is determined and confirmed in Shuihuxi. Both Taihang Mountain and Liangshan Marsh appeared as the regional base in the previous Water Margin Story, however, it is unified as Liangshan Marsh in the Zaju of Yuan Dynasty. Notably, the city of Dongping may have played a crucial part in unifying the regional base. Dongping, at the time, was highly developed and advanced city in terms of both economy and culture, and more importantly, was the region in which the Zaju was popular and widespread. As verified in the travel records of Chentai and others, the Liangshan Marsh located in Dongping City, Shandong Province of Shuihuxi was the place where the Water Margin Story had been passed down to the next generation. On top of that, Dongping, in which the Liangshan Marsh was located, is the city oft-cited as the birthplace of the Zaju of Yuan Dynasty because the Zaju was hugely well-received in the area. As such, the Water Margin Story commonly played among ordinary people of the time naturally extended and was played on stages in the form of the Drama of Water Margin, gaining great popularity of the time. With the advent of more developed traffic mode bridging land and water, the Drama became more widespread, gradually extending its geographical territory of performance. It may be interpreted that further dissemination or geographical extension of the story, shared in a specific area, was made possible via one of the most popular forms of performance of the time.
