19세기 말 영국 외교관 칼스(W. R. Carles)가 수집한 한반도 지역정보의 분석

Analyzing Geographical Information on the Korean Peninsula Collected by English Diplomat W. R. Carles of the Late 19th Century in ‘Life in Corea

본고에서는 1884~1885년 영국 부영사로 조선에 체류했던 윌리엄 칼스(William R. Carles)가 저술한 『조선풍물지(Life in Corea)』를 분석 텍스트로 하여 그의 조선에서의 여행 행적과 그가 수집한 지역정보의 특징을 살펴보았다. 『조선풍물지』는 개항기 한반도 중북부 지방의 사회경제적 특성과 일반인들의 생활상을 재현하고 있어 기행문이면서도 민속기술지적 성격을 띠고 있다. 텍스트에 포함된 자연 및 인문 지리정보를 분석한 결과 지역별 교역 현황, 특산물, 산업 특성 등을 포함하는 경제 관련 정보가 가장 큰 비중을 나타냈다. 지역조사 내용에는 외부 세계에 잘 알려지지 않은 동아시아 국가에 관한 정보를 얻고자 하는 칼스 개인의 호기심도 일부 투영되어 있으나 대체로 경제적 가치에 근거한 부존자원의 탐사와 이윤을 극대화할 수 있는 교역 상품의 발굴 노력이 뚜렷하게 드러난다. 칼스의 한반도 지역조사는 19세기 영국의 상업적 제국주의 확대 과정 속에서 조영수호통상조약의 운용에 필요한 정보를 얻기 위한 목적으로 진행되었음을 알 수 있다

This paper has examined the characteristics of geographical information on the Korean Peninsula collected by British vice consul, William R. Carles who stayed in Joseon from 1884 to 1885 by analyzing his book ‘Life in Corea.’ ‘Life in Corea’ is an ethnography as well as a travel essay on Joseon of the late 19th century in that the information gathered by Carles focused on geographical and socioeconomic features of central and northern provinces of the Korean Peninsula and represented ordinary people’s everyday lives. While Carles’ texts imply his imperialistic perspective and private curiosity of Joseon, he investigated physical and human environmental characteristics of regions and reported them to the British government. He tried to find the items and values of trade between Joseon and Britain, and his intention was apparent in the texts. Carles as a diplomat accomplished the mission imposed by the British government for the benefit of his country, as Britain made an effort to expand its economic base in the middle of competitions among the Western powers, China and Japan through application and management of the ‘Treaty of Friendship and Commerce Between Great Britain and Corea
