The purpose of this study is two-fold. One is to identify problems that cause underachievement in grammar learning in a 1st-year middle school English class. The other is to find effective ways to solve such problems. A qualitative research method was employed with two 1st-year underachievers in English at a school located in a city in the mid-central region. The data were collected from in-depth, semi-structured interviews and face-to-face mentoring sessions. Every interview and mentoring session was recorded, transcribed and analyzed along with the interviewer’s and mentor’s journals, the class observation reports, and the records of the meetings between the researcher and interviewer/mentor. Four problems were identified as the causes of the subjects’ underachievement in grammar learning: excessive orientation toward listening and reading comprehension, insufficient acquisition of sentence patterns studied in primary English, ineffective study habits, and ineffective instruction. Four solutions are proposed: providing systematic explanations of grammar rules and sentence structures using grammar terms, employing diverse class activities that allow discovery learning and/or inductive learning, improving study habits by utilizing homework assignments, and improving the content of grammar sections of English textbooks.
