This study examined a characteristic of figure painting by elementary school children by each grade. As a result, five feathers, ie, eye, nose, mouth, ear and hair, showed the following traits. The children in first and second grades(seven and eight-year old) demonstrated only self-subjective expression; those in fifth and sixth grades(eleven and twelve - year old) painted more realistic expression based on their exact observation; those in third and fourth grades showed subjective expression as well as realistic expression. Therefore, the development process of artistic expression can be summarized like this: first and second! grade children are called at a subjective stage, third and fourth grade children are in a transitional stage, while fifth and sixth grade children are in a realistic stage. The same pattern of development has been found by scholars art of Western children’s. The stages of subjective-transitional -realistic are the same as the Symbolic stage -Gang Age- Pseudo Realism stages as classified by Rowenfalde. This study proves that Western and Korean children have the same development process of their artistic expression. However, Korean children show a slightly faster developmental gap between groups children Korean and west. These stages for Korean children were age seven and eight- year old at subjective stage, nine and ten - year old at transitional stage, eleven and twelve -year old at realistic stage, compared to seven, eight and nine-year old at symbolic stage, nine, ten and eleven -year old at Gang age, eleven, twelve, and thirteen-year old at pseudo-realism. It assumes that Korean children’ developmental process in their artistic expression is one-year faster that of western children.
