The present study purposed to restructure the programs of art education utilizing traditional plays in order to develop positive national identity for the educational value of traditional plays in children. For this purpose, we examined the theoretical background such as the concepts, characteristics, kinds and types of traditional plays and the value of traditional plays in art education, investigated the current state of and problems in traditional play education as a part of Pleasant Life for 1st and 2nd grade elementary students under the 7th Elementary Education Curriculum, and suggested plans for improvement. The education of Pleasant Life for the 1st and 2nd grade elementary students is limited to temporary experiences in traditional plays or making and expression of traditional play tools. Thus, in order to meet contemporary educational requirements and develop identity for the effect of traditional plays, we need to develop guidelines for the efficient instruction of traditional plays and to change field teachers’ idea for the application of traditional plays to art education. Art education models utilizing traditional plays are expected to contribute to children’s positive experience in traditional plays and the development of their national identity through actual use of such plays in the field of education.
