Case Study of Drama Therapy Using Clay

Many people today are suffering from psychological symptoms of various kinds due to the mental stress increasing along with the advance of civilization. This study is a case study of drama therapy using clay and the objective of the study was improving self expression and self control, developing creativeness, and improving interaction through a clinical study. The object was 8 patients from day ward of mental center in N city. The study was performed by observing and analysing clinical cases. I am running a porcelain studio now and my major at college was ceramic art. Since the main project in my studio is practicing rather than porcelain making, I have been ensured that clay is closely related to people s sensitivity and thinking through clay works with many people. As for the program in this study, self image making was performed applying speaking technique and association technique for a preparatory stage in the process of drama therapy. On the next stage of activation, patients were advised to begin working to make a creative presentation with clay. And on the final stage, we summarized our clay work by sharing emotion emerged during the drama therapy seeing and feeling the works of participants, and further, discussing the expression and creativity of the works. Results First, I approached to the psychological therapy by leading a free thinking and helping patients express what they want to express. And the using method and effect of the material were advised. Second, patients are advised to express drawing the retained inner energy. The curer should not make a judgement from sensitivity. Third, patients are especially stubborn and self assertive and act different from curer s intention. A curer should not make warning, force, or order, and when the patients don t want to work, the curer should not push working by force. Forth, even though the use and application of artistic media can make more effective method of cure, quality of the curer should be considered first rather than the expertise in art. It has a big impact on patient managing ability. I had difficulty in this study because there was not a study material using clay made in advance in the field of drama therapy. However, this study has a significance as the first case study on porcelain making as drama therapy using clay.
