Social skills are needed to overcome limits in the expressions of language in students who are lagging behind in expressing their feelings and are also fundamental and essential for future social adaptation. And this study was conducted to examine the effects of a group art activity program on the development of social skills in lower grade elementary children. For the study, the initial study group included 30 students who scored the lowest points in a sociality test among 109 lower grade elementary students in an elementary school located in N Eup, M City, South Kyungsang Province, Korea. Among these 30, only 16 boys and girls volunteered to go though the study 8 in experimental group (Group 1) and 8 in control group (Group 2)). The Group 1 underwent a group art activity program once or twice a week for 60 to 90 min each for a total of 14 sessions. The personality projection tests including the kinetic house-tree-person and the kinetic school drawing were used to examine the effects on the development of social skills. The Personality Test Tool for Elementary Students by chung ,Bum-Mo(1971) modified for lower grade elementary students was used as the social skills assessment tool. The group art program was conducted in stages in which the early stage included three sessions, seven sessions for the mid stage, and four sessions for the end stage. The study found that children relaxed more and formed relationships in the early stage; expressed their feelings better and understood themselves and others better in the mid stage; and changed their behaviors and showed improved social skills in the end stage. This study suggests that the group art activity program was effective in improving social skills in lower grade elementary students.
