한국인 EFL 성인 학습자의 wh-구와 부정대명사 해석의 다양성 연구

A Divergence in Interpreting Wh-phrases and Indefinite Pronouns by the Korean EFL Adult Learners

이 연구는 한국인 EFL 성인 학습자들이 wh-구들을 영어로 어떻게 해석하는가를 연구 조사할 것이다. 본 연구는 학습자들이 wh-구들을 해석할 때 나타나는 사용 특징들을 알아보기 위해 실험을 실시하였다. 한국인 EFL 성인학습자들이 얼마나 정확히 wh-구와 부정어(indefinite word)를 구별하여 사용할 수 있는가를 점검하기 위해 학습자들에게 두 가지 유형의 서면과제를 수행하도록 하였다. 이 과정을 통해, 본 연구는 학습자들이 wh-구를 두 가지 방식으로 해석했음을 발견했다. 즉, 동일한 단어를 의문사로 혹은 부정사로도 해석한 것이다. 이러한 결과에 따라, 본 연구는 그 원인을 밝히고 다음과 같은 결과들을 제시하고자 한다. 첫째로, 이러한 현상들은 wh-구의 이동이 있는지 없는지에 달려있다는 점이다. 둘째로, 이는 한국어 의문사와 부정어는 주어진 문장에서 동일한 통사적 위치에서 나타나기 때문에 한국인 EFL 성인 학습자들이 이를 영어로 해석하는데 어려움을 겪는 사실에서 기인되는 것이다. 그러므로 본 연구는 이러한 현상들에 중점을 두고 UG의 운영체재 내에서 학습자들이 wh-구조와 부정어간의 차이를 구별하는데 어려움을 겪는 이유에 대한 통사적 설명을 제시하고자 한다.

This study is to investigate the interpretation of wh-phrases in English by the Korean EFL adult learners. To explore the characteristics of their use shown when the learners interpret wh-phrases, this study conducted the experiment in which the learners were required to perform two types of written tasks to check how exactly the EFL learners can use wh-phrases and indefinite words. Through this process, this study found that they interpreted wh-phrases in two ways: they incoherently interpreted the same words as either interrogative items or indefinite items. Along with the results, this study tried to find the reason of such interpretations and present the following findings: Firstly, these phenomena are subject to whether movement of wh-words is or not. Secondly, they stem from the fact that since the Korean interrogative words and the indefinite words appear in the same syntactic domain of a given sentence, the Korean EFL adult learners are likely to have difficulty in interpreting them in English. Focusing on these phenomena, this study will attempt to present the syntactic account for the reasons why they had the difficulty in telling the difference between wh-constructions and indefinite words within the UG framework.
