제주도 신석기문화 연구의 성과와 전망

A Review of the Studies on Neolithic Culture in Jeju Island

현재 제주도내에서 확인되는 신석기시대 유적의 수는 60여 개소에 이른다. 제주도 본섬을 포함한 부속도서에 이르기까지 제주도 전역에서 확인되는 추세이다. 제주 신석기시대 고고학은 증가하는 자료의 축적으로 단순한 토기문양의 분류에 따른 편년단계에서 벗어나 발굴된 유구와 유물의 종합적인 해석이 필요한 단계에 있다. 이에 그간의 연구성과를 정리하여 제주도 신석기시대를 초기, 조기, 전기, 중기, 후기, 만기의 6단계로 구분하였다. 우선 고산리유적을 중심으로 러시아와 일본의 유적을 비교하여 고산리 신석기 초기문화에 대해 논의하였다. 이와 함께 초기 고산리식토기단계 이후에 나타나는 남부지방 토기단계의 흐름, 즉 조기 융기문토기(신암리식토기)단계 - 전기 자돌압인문토기(영선동식토기) 단계 - 중기 태선침선문토기(수가리1식토기)단계 후기 퇴화침선·압인·압날점열문토기(봉계리식토기) 단계 - 만기 이중구연토기(율리식토기) 단계로의 전개 흐름이 과연 제주도에서는 어떻게 전개되는지 정리하였다. 또한 단편적이나마 지질학 등의 자연과학과의 연계를 통한 제주 신석기시대 고환경 복원을 시도해 보았다.

There are more than 60 Neolithic sites throughout Jeju Island including neighboring islets. Neolithic archaeology in Jeju Island needs to interpret artifacts and features thoroughly beyond a sequence dating by the stylistic seriation of the pottery. By reviewing the studies on Neolithic culture in Jeju Island, we classify Neolithic age in Jeju Island into 6 phases like the beginning, earlier, early, middle, late, and the last phase. We examine Gosan ri site as the beginning phase of Neolithic culture, by comparing it with the sites in Russia and Japan. We also order the phases of Neolithic culture in Jeju Island, by applying the stylistic seriation of the pottery in southern Korean Peninsular. Gosan- ri style pottery is followed by Sinam ri style (the earlier phase), Yeongseon-dong style (the early phase), the first Suga-ri style (the middle phase), Bonggye-ri style (the late phase), and Yul-li style (the last phase) pottery. Lastly, we examine the environmental conditions in Neolithic age by interpreting ecofacts through natural sciences including geology.
