The purpose of this study was to assess the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and preservative effects of Nelumbinis Folium and Spirodelae Herba from each 70% ethanolic extracts. The total content of polyphenol ethanolic extracts of Nelumbinis Folium and Spirodela polyrhiza (L.) Sch. was on average ethanolic extracts of Spirodelae Herba 331.2 ± 1.0 ㎎/g, 317.8 ± 1.1 ㎎/g, and 353.1 ± 5.6 ㎎/g, while the total content of flavonoid of those was 331.2 ± 1.0 ㎎/g, 317.8 ± 1.1 ㎎/g, and 353.1 ± 5.6 ㎎/g respectively. With a concentration level of 1~1000 (㎍/㎖) ethanolic extracts of Nelumbinis Folium and Spirodelae Herba the range of removal of l, 1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) radicals was 9.9 ± 0.3 % ~ 82.7 ± 0.3 %, 16.0 ± 1.8 % ~ 85.7 ± 5.0 % respectively and the range of removal of 2,2′-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radicals was also 0.0 ± 1.0 % ~ 93.8 ± 0.1 %, 0.0 ± 1.6 % ~ 92.2 ± 0.2 % respectively. There were decreases in reactive oxygen species (ROS) generations ethanolic extracts of Nelumbinis Folium and 10,100 (㎍/㎖) ethanolic extracts of Spirodelae Herba also present decrease in ROS generation. While only 100 ㎍/㎖ ethanolic extracts of Nelumbinis Folium. For the anti-bacterial features using a paper disk and the preservative features using petri film, no significance was found and therefore none of the three extracts had anti-bacterial or preaervative features.
