해수면 상승 흔적이 확인되는 동삼동유적의 성격에 대하여

동삼동패총은 고고학사적으로 우리나라 신석기시대의 대표적인 유적으로 평가할 수 있는 매우 중요한 유적 중의 하나이다. 이 유적의 조사 성과에 기인하여 우리나라 신석기시대의 전체적인 편년안이 제시되기도 하였지만, 실제로 나타나는 층위적 양상은 어느 시기에선가 심한 교란현상이 확인되고 있음을 간과할 수 없다. 또한 이러한 점은 이 유적뿐만 아니라 남해안의 대부분 패총유적에서 나타나는 공통적인 현상으로도 볼 수 있다. 이번에 소개하는 동삼동패총 상부의 단구면에서 확인되었던 유적에서는 이러한 현상이 나타나는 원인과 시기를 파악할 수 있는 중요한 자료가 될 수 있을 것으로 판단된다. 이 유적을 검토하는 과정에서 봉계리식토기를 중심으로 하는 신석기시대 후기 단계에 7∼8m 정도 이상의 해수면 상승흔적을 확인하였고, 최대 해침 상한선은 13m에 이르는 것으로 추정하였다. 이러한 환경 변화는 유적의 입지와 생업에 지대한 영향을 미쳤을 것으로 판단되며, 때문에 유적 조사에 있어서 유적지와 주변의 고환경과 그 변화상을 시 · 공간적으로 복원하는 일은 매우 중요한 의미를 지니고 있는 것으로 볼 수 있다. 아울러 이러한 증거가 확인되었던 과거 김해 수가리패총이나 남해 도서의 상노대도유적과 같은 유적들의 성격을 다시 한번 논의할 수 있는 계기가 되기를 바라면서 이러한 환경변화와 관련한 생업과 입지 및 문화변동에 대하여 향후의 과제로 삼고싶다.

Dongsam-dong Shell Mound is archaeologically one of the most important relics from the New Stone Age in Korea. The chronological history of New Stone Age in Korea was established using what we had found in this area, but we cannot neglect that the actual formation of strata shows a significant distortion some time in the past. This is not only seen in Dongsam-dong, but also in most shell mounds along the south coast. The fracture on top of Dongsam-dong Shell Mound is thought to be an important resource to understand the cause and time frame of such distortion. In the proces of investigation. it was found that the late New Stone Age. marked by Bonggye-ri style earthenware. saw an average of 7- 8m elevation in water level and the maximum elevation reached approximately 13m. Such environmental change must have imposed a significant influence to the location of relics and the lifestyle of local people. This is why it is very important to consider both time and space when tracking the ancient environmental changes. I hope that these findings can relate to the characteristic of Suga-ri Shell Mound in Gimhae and Sangnodae-do relics by the South Sea for further discussions. My future study topic would be change in lifestyle, location, culture in relation to environmental changes.
