茶山 丁若鏞의 字學에 대한 인식 및 六書論

Dasan(茶山) Jeong Yak-yong(丁若鏞) s Recognition of Graphonomy and Discussions about six categories of character construction(六書)

본 논문은 茶山 丁若鏞의 ‘字學에 대한 인식’을 살펴보고, 아울러 茶山의 ‘六書에 대한 견해’를 고찰하여 그 의의를 탐구하는 것을 목적으로 한 것이다. 字學은 經學 연구의 기초가 되며 또 그것의 중요한 방법론이라고 할 수있다. 다산은 이러한 자학의 방법론을 경학 연구에 적극 활용하였다. 또한 다산은 자학의 각 분야에 대해 자신의 의견을 다방면으로 제출하였다. 그러므로 경학에 큰 성취를 이룬 다산의 학문을 온전하게 이해하기 위해서 그의자학을 연구하는 것은 일정한 의의가 있다고 하겠다. 2장 ‘字學에 대한 인식’에서는 다산이 제시하였던 자학 연구의 목적, 문자 공부와 교육의 바람직한 방법 등에 대해 정리하였다. 다산은 글자의 造字 원리에 대한 이해를 통해 글자의 본뜻을 정확히 파악하고 이를 바탕으로 좋은 문장을 쓰는 것을 자학의 목적으로 삼았으며, 이를 위한 문자 공부 및 교육의 방법으로 ‘觸類旁通’과 ‘竭其族, 別其異’를 제시하였다. 3장 ‘六書論’에서는 다산의 六書에 대한 이해, 다산이 제시했던 六書의 구체적인 사례, 다산 六書論의 특징 등에 대해 살펴보았다. 다산은 육서의 개념과 원리를 ‘文字之法’, ‘子母相生之法’, ‘偏旁離合之制’, ‘文字之源’, ‘造字之本’이라고 이해하고 있었다. 또한 다산 육서론의 특징으로는 許愼이 제시한 形聲과 다른 독창적인 諧聲 개념을 사용하였고, 六書互兼說에 대한 인식을 가지면서 특히 會意兼指事를 제시하였으며, 說文解字 를 참고하였지만 독자적인 글자 해석을 시도한 경우가 있었고, 육서를 활용한 글자 풀이의 상당수는 경서 해석을 위한 훈고 작업에 활용하였다는 점 등을 제시할 수 있다.

This paper was intended to examine Dasan(茶山) Jeong Yakyong(丁若鏞) s recognition of graphonomy and simultaneously to look into Dasan s views of six categories of character construction(六書) and research the meaning. Graphonomy can be said to be the basis and important methodology for Confucian Classics. Dasan positively utilized such methodology for graphonomy in studying Confucian Classics. Also, Dasan submitted his various views of each field of graphonomy. Therefore, it would be significant to study his graphonomy to fully understand Dasan s learning that made great achievements in Confucian Classics. ‘Recognition of Graphonomy’ in Chapter 2 described the purpose of graphonomy, desirable methods for characters study and education, etc. Dasan regarded it as the purpose of graphonomy to exactly grasp the original meaning of characters through understanding of pictograph(象形), associative method(會意), picto-phonetic method(諧聲) which is the principle of characters being generated and, on the basis of that, to write good sentences. Also, as a characters study and education for that, Dasan proposed “Leaning widely with respect to the same kinds of characters” and “Learning knowing the same kinds and discerning the difference points”. ‘Discussions about six categories of character construction in Chapter 3’ described understanding of Dasan s six categories of character construction, concrete examples of six categories of character construction proposed by Dasan and characteristics which can be found from discussions about Dasan s six categories of character construction. Dasan understood the concept and principle of six categories of character construction as ‘文字之法’, ‘子母相生之法’, ‘偏旁離合之制’, ‘文字之源’, ‘造字之本’. Also, for characteristics of discussions about Dasan s six categories of character construction, this paper referred to Dasan s peculiar concepts of picto-phonetic method, recognition of ‘六書互兼說’, refer to Shuowenjiezi(說文解字) but attempted independent interpretation of characters and interpreting Confucian Classics by utilized six categories of character construction.
