Self-Managing Team Activity from Absorptive Capacity Perspective

기업이 지속적인 경쟁우위를 갖기 위해서는 환경 변화에 적응하거나 또는 환경을 리드할 수 있는 새로운 지식을 지속적으로 창출하고 활용할 수 있는 능력이 있어야 한다. Cohen과 Levinthal(1990)은 조직의 이런 능력을 흡수능력(Absorptive capacity)으로 개념화하고 있다. 흡수능력이란 조직의 내. 외부로부터 지식을 확인하고, 흡수하고, 이용하는 능력을 말한다. 한편 Zahra & George(2002)는 흡수능력을 지식을 습득, 소화, 변환, 활용의 네 가지 차원으로 분류하고, 습득과 소화를 묶어 잠재적 흡수능력(Perceived absorptive capacity) 그리고 변환과 활용을 묶어 실현된 흡수능력(Realized absorptive capacity)으로 구분하였다. 그들에 따르면 잠재적 흡수능력이 실현되려면 사회통합 메커니즘이 작용하여 전환되는 시간을 단축시켜야 한다고 했다. 본 연구에서는 팀구성원들의 잠재적 흡수능력이 팀활동(사회적 통합메카니즘)을 통해 실현될 수 있음을 전제한다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 팀의 주요 구성요인도 잠재적 흡수능력과 이를 실현시키기위한 사회적 통합메카니즘 차원으로 나누어 살펴보았다. 그리고 이들 구성요소들을 활성화시킬 수 있는 방안들을 제시하였다. 하지만 본 연구의 대부분의 내용들은 기존의 관련 문헌들에 대한 고찰에 의한 결론들이기 때문에 실무적 시사점을 갖기 위해서는 실증적 연구가 뒷받침되어야 한다.

With rapid changes in technology, and global competition, the success of many organizations has become progressively more dependent on their ability to create and utilize knowldge. The absorptive capacity(ACAP), initially conceptualized by Cohen & Levinthal(1990), is firm s ability to acquire, assimilate, transform, and exploit knowledge. ACAP exists as two subsets of potential and realized absorptive capacities. Potential capacity(PACAP) comprises knowledge acquisition and assimilation capabilities, and realized capacity(RACAP) centers on knowledge transformation and exploitation.(Zahra & George, 2002) Social Integration mechanism is indispensable to reduce the gap between PACAP and RACAP. In this article, accordingly, major components of self-managing team are analyzed from viewpoints of PACAP and social integration, respectively. And multiple interventions are proposed to activate these components as a way of enhancing ACAP. Most of this study are only based on a review of previous theory and research regarding ACAP and self-managing team. Therefore, future empirical researches are required for practical implications
