Economic Analysis of Open Source Software Development

웹서버 시장에서 지배적인 위치를 차지하고 있는 Apache, 빠르게 성장하고 있는 Linux, 세계 조판프 로그램의 표준인 텍(TeX)은 모두 대가 없이 사용할 수 있는 오픈소스 소프트웨어이다. 자발적인 개발자 들이 자신의 노력을 투입하여 만든 결과를 아무런 대가 없이 공개하는 것이 합리적인 행위인가를 논의 한다. 이 논문에서는 놀라운 속도로 성장하는 오프소스 프로젝트와 오픈소스 현상을 분석하는 최근 10 여년간의 연구 동향을 개괄하고 새로운 연구방향을 제시하고자 한다. 기본적으로 오픈소스 소프트웨어 (OSS) 프로젝트에 참여하는 동기를 고찰하고, 그 연관 주제를 논의한다. 또한 참여 동기 이외에 오픈소스 활동의 다양한 논점들을 검토한다.

Over the past decade, open source software projects have grown dramatically. The Apache project has succeeded in the web server market and now has the dominant position in the market. One of the oldest open source software, TeX, has been successful since its birth in 1978. Linux is now one of the benchmarks of the success of open source software (OSS) and still growing. This paper reviews the literature on the economics of the OSS development. Many researches, theoretically or empirically, examined the motivation of software developers to participate in OSS projects even though they are not rewarded from their OSS works. We also examined the issues related to OSS including network effects, license, competition between OSS and PS (proprietary software), and the governance of the OSS organizations. We overview the recent research stream of open source phenomenon and suggest future research issues to be discussed.
