홍콩의 가족기업들에 대한 연구: 지배구조를 중심으로

The Study of Family Businesses: The Case of Hong Kong

본 연구는 홍콩의 기업들이 왜 이러한 가족기업 스타일을 벗어나지 못하는지를 탐구하였다. 이를 위하여 홍콩사회의 형성과정과 화교집단의 성격을 규명했다. 그리고 홍콩 가족기업의 특성을 파악 하는데 주력하였다. 또한 이러한 가부장 형태의 지배구조에 대한 심도 있는 분석을 단행했 다. 이를 통하여, 21세기 글로벌(global) 환경에서 홍콩 가족기업 집단의 특성이 갖는 장단점을 찾아보았다. 이 연구는 재벌개혁과 지배구조 개편이 초미의 관심사가 되고 있는 한국사회에 귀중한 타산지 석이 될 수 있다고 본다. 한국은 초고속 경제성장과 민주화를 동시에 이루어 낸 유일무이한 사회 이다. 반도체, 전자, LCD 등이 첨단산업이 주업종이고, 대기업들이 급속히 글로벌화 되고 있는 가운데, 경제의 주축을 이루고 있는 재벌기업들은 여전히 전근대적인 지배구조를 유지하고 있다. 사뭇 홍콩의 경우와 매우 흡사하다 아니 할 수 없다. 홍콩 가족기업의 분석은 재벌의 지배구조를 개혁해야 하는 우리사회에 적지 않은 교훈이 될 수 있다고 본다.

This research is to explore why mid-sized firms of Hong Kong still sustain family business structure. The history of Hong Kong society and the formation of ethnic Chinese have been carefully examined in order to tackle the family businesses of Hong Kong. In addition, this study focuses on finding out some characteristics of Hong Kong businesses run by ethnic Chinese. Especially, the study attempts to analyze the governance structure of family business based on patriarchism. As a consequence, pros and cons of family businesses of Hong Kong have been found in the context of 21th century global business environment. This research might be quite meaningful for the Korean society in which the reform of chaebol must be done. Korea is an unprecedented nation that achieved both the rapid economic growth and democratization. The Korean chaebol. large scale business, have produced high-tech products such as semiconductors, cell phone, and LCD. However, they sustain traditional family business structure in terms of governance. Their governance structure is nothing different from that of their Hong Kong counterpart. Thus, the analysis of the family businesses of Hong Kong is profound for the Korean society which is to cope with the reform of chaebol, largest family business in the world
