동적역량이론을 이용한 프로젝트 포트폴리오 관리와 기업 경쟁우위와의 영향관계 분석: 방위산업을 중심으로

A Study of the Effects of Project Portfolio Management on the Competitive Advantage with Dynamic Capability Theory in the Defense Industry

기업은 빠르게 변해가는 경영환경에 적절히 대응하고 그 변화를 주도할 수 있어야 시장에서 경쟁우위를 확보하고 지속 성장할 수 있다. 이를 위한 기업 전략의 주요 흐름들은 1980년대 외부환 경분석 이론, 1990년대 자원기반 이론을 거쳐 1990년대 말 동적역량 이론의 탄생으로 이어지고 있다. 한편, 경영환경 변화에 대응하는 기업의 또 다른 노력으로 프로젝트 관리(PM)와 프로젝트 포트폴리오 관리를 들 수 있는데, 본 연구는 방위산업 기업들을 대상으로 동적역량 이론을 이용하여 프로젝트 포트폴리오 관리의 도입이 기업에 경쟁우위를 효과적으로 가져다 줄 수 있는지 여부를 조사하는 목적을 가지고 있다. 본 연구는 동적역량이론의 대표적인 분석 틀인 Teece(1997)의 PPP framework를 활용하여 동적역량을 프로젝트 포트폴리오 관리로 가정하고, 연구 설계 및 실증분석을 수행하였다. 본 연구는 실증분석을 통해 기업이 프로젝트 포트폴리오 관리를 도입하면 자원과 프로젝트를 더 효율적으로 활용할 수 있게 되어 기업 경쟁우위를 강화할 수 있음을 증명 하였다. 따라서 본 연구는 프로젝트 포트폴리오 관리의 도입이 필요하다는 사실을 잘 알지 못하는 기업들과 프로젝트 포트폴리오 관리의 도입을 결단하지 못하는 기업들에게 프로젝트 포트폴리오 관리 도입의 당위성을 제시하고 있다.

A business firm needs to respond and adapt to the changing business environment in order to achieve and sustain the competitive advantages in the fast changing and very competitive market of today. Business strategy is an important discipline that provides the guidelines on how to deal with the changing business environment and to develop competitive advantages. The theory development and discussion in the business strategy discipline shows a trend change from External Environment Analysis theory by Michael Porter in the 1980s, Resource Based View in the 1990s, and to the Dynamic Capability theory in the late 1990s. Another effort by business firms to cope with the changing business environment may be the development and application of project management theories such as Project Portfolio Management. The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of Project Portfolio Management in the context of the Dynamic Capability theory on creating the competitive advantages for business firms. This study used the PPP framework by Teece(1997), which is a representative analysis framework in the Dynamic Capability theory. Data was collected from the companies in the defense industry of Korea, and used for empirical tests. The results show that Project Portfolio Management provides substantial and significant helps for the business firms in creating competitive advantages. The study results may encourage the reluctant companies to adopt Project Portfolio Management with more confidence.
