In the Regency period, a very famous novelist, Jane Austen, was born in Britain. She left six great works: Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey, Persuasion, written between 1811 and 1817 and Sanditon, which was published posthumously. These works describe the daily lives of the main characters, who are members of British middle-class families, with a realistic and satirical touch, thereby incidentally providing us with an understanding of the tea and tea culture of that period. These novels were selected for this paper, because they were completed in a comparatively short period of time (about seven years) and one of their common subjects was tea and tea culture. She shows the daily lives of the protagonists world around the tea table through various circumstances and events, including their conversations and relationships among the characters. Although this setting gives us rather narrow perspective of that period, the space they live in is not one of isolation from society, but a living space of cultural enjoyment, unity and healing, relaxation and socialization, to the extent that we can learn a great deal about the society and culture of that period. Given that the Austen phenomenon is highly recognized and well accepted around the world, this special study and research into Jane Austen s novels can provide additional insight into the English tea and tea culture.
