나오시마(直島)프로젝트 중 베네세 하우스 공간에 나타난 장소특정성에 관한 연구

A Study on Site Specificity Shown on the Space of Benesse House in Naosima Project

본 논문은 일본 나오시마(直島)라는 특정 지역에서 베네세 하우스(Benesse House) 공간이 현대미술과 결합되면서 파생된 장소와 미술 간의 상호 영향과 장소특정적 요소들을 살펴보는데 연구목적을 두고자 한다. 본 연구자는 베네세 하우스내의 현대미술 설치 프로젝트가 파생시킨 여러 변화들 중 기존 지역 공간들이 과연 어떻게 현대 예술의 특정 장소로 자리 잡게 되었는지, 이어 그 인과 관계로 인해 현대 미술계에서 새삼 주목을 끈 자연과 건축의 조화 및 공간과 작품 설치의 상생 효과 그리고 미술의 장소특정적 속성들을 구체적으로 분석하는데 논의의 초점을 맞추고자 한다. 이것을 근거로 본고에서는 첫째로 나오시마 프로젝트를 통해 장소특정성의 작품들의 설치로 문화예술지역으로 탈바꿈된 지역이 예술과 상생적 성장을 하고 있음을 확인한다. 둘째는 앞의 논지를 이어 받아 호텔과 미술관이 결합된 공간인 베네세 하우스의 공간을 분석하고, 차이궈창, 히로시 스키모토, 야스다 칸 등 구체적 작품 사례들을 확인을 통해 베네세 하우스의 안과 밖에 설치된 현대미술 작품의 장소특정성에 관하여 논의의 방향을 제시하고 입증해 보인다. 셋째는 나오시마 프로젝트의 구체적인 사례들을 통해, 특정 지역의 자연, 건축, 예술의 각 요소들이 소통, 교류하면서, 동시대 예술의 향방을 가리키고 있음을 그리고 학술적으로는 나오시마 프로젝트가 장소특정적 미술과 관련된 담론에 기여하는 긍정적 사례임을 거론하고자 한다.

This study is designed to examine mutual influences between a location and art as well as site-specific elements resulting from the convergence of the space of Benesse House and Oval Building with modern art in Naosima, Japan. Among diverse changes ensuing from the modern art installation project within Benesse House, the argument is mainly focused on analyzing how a local space has turned into a specific site for modern art; and harmony of nature and architecture, synergic effects between space and artwork installation, and site-specific attributes of art, which are now intriguing the world of modern art due to their causal effects. Based on that, the study firstly verifies that the region, which has changed into a site for culture and art thanks to the installation of site-specific artworks through the Naosima Project, is showing synergic growth between the local community and art. Secondly, the study analyzes the space of Benesse House that is converging a hotel and a museum, and Oval; observes such specific cases as Yasuda Kan, Chaikochang and Hirosi Skimoto; and presents a direction of arguments on site specificity of contemporary artists’ works installed both inside and outside a building. And lastly, by examining details of the Naosima Project, the study maintains that each and every element of nature, architecture and art in a specific location communicates and interacts, while pointing out the direction of contemporary art; and that in an academic perspective, the Naosima Project is a positive case contributing to the discourse regarding site-specific art.
