The Effects of Offshore Wind Farm Developments on Local Tourism Industries : a case study on Delaware

The growing interest in generating renewable energy has been pushing the international society towards developments of offshore wind farms that produce energy in an environment-friendly way. Although the offshore wind farms contribute in producing healthy energy the areas where the wind turbines have be built are within tourism sights. Of course, tourism is the most important economic growth factor in those areas which in turn causes delays in building the wind farms due to the opposition by the local people. This study therefore aims to study the relationship between the development of offshore wind farms and the tourism industries in order to find out if the wind turbines affect the local economic growth by limiting the number of visitors. The study finds out that despite the concerns of local people, there are no negative impacts on the tourism industry as a result of offshore wind farm developments. The survey rather shows that more people are willing to visit the place for new sights. The development of offshore wind farms therefore should contribute to the sustainable economic growth.
