The purpose of this paper is to analyze the honorific expressions used in the minutes of the National Diet of Japan over the five years from 1957 to 1961, and over the five years from 2007 to 2011, in order to investigate the changes of the honorific expressions during the 50 years from the Showa period to the Heisei period. This paper analyzes five “kami/ shimoichidan” verbs, and this inquiry also examines honorific expressions involving the auxiliary verbs (morau, kureru) attached to the main verb. The main results of this paper are as follows. Firstly, in both the “kami/ shimoichidan”verbs and “godan” verbs, o‐ninaruhas been most frequently used, and ‐rareru has been second most frequently used during the times of 1957‐1961 and 2007‐2011. Secondly, during the 50 years, the use of o‐ninaru has decreased by about ten percentand the use of ‐rareru has increased about ten percent for the “kami/shimoichidan” verbs. While a number of people pay attention tothe degree of politeness, an increasing number of people focus on expressions which can be conveniently used. Thirdly, itadaku has been used more frequently than kudasaru. In addition, simplified forms have been very widely used, and this trend is equally identified in both the itadaku‐form and the kudasaru‐form.
