초등학생의 영어 표현능력 향상을 위한 Show and Tell 활용 방안 연구

A study on the use of Show and Tell activities for developing elementary school students’ English speaking and writing abilities

The purpose of this study is to explore ways of using Show and Tell activities for elementary school students’English learning and examine its effects on their English speaking and writing abilities. For this, a task-based language teaching model of utilizing Show and Tell activities was developed and applied to one class of 23 fifth grade students for fifteen weeks. Pre and post speaking and writing tests were conducted and pre and post questionnaires with regard to the students’affective domains were administered. In addition, learning journals, interviews, and teaching journals were collected and the classes were video taped. The analysis of the data shows that speaking and writing abilities of all levels of students were significantly improved. Although the students’affective attitudes were not statistically significantly enhanced, the analysis of the qualitative data indicates that the Show and Tell activities had a positive effect on their interest, confidence and willingness to communicate in English. These results suggest that Show and Tell could be a useful task for EFL elementary school students’English learning because it personalizes learning contents and offers natural and authentic communicative opportunities.
