무한시장 알리기 프로젝트 - 고등학교 방과후 민주시민교육 프로그램에 관한 질적 사례 연구

Muhan Market Project: A Qualitative Case Study on A Project-Based High School Afterschool Program

본 연구는 어느 인문계 고등학교의 민주시민교육 프로그램에 대한 연구 결과 중 일부를 담고 있다. 본 연구는 2016년 7월부터 방과후 수업으로 시작된 ‘젠트리피케이션(Gentrification, 둥지 내몰림 현상) 이해를 위한 동네시장 알리기 프로젝트’에 관한 질적 사례 연구이다. 연구자는 프로젝트 수업의 주요 활동에 대한 참여관찰 및 심층면담을 통해 학생들이 해당 프로젝트 수업을 통해 어떠한 학습 경험을 얻었는지 분석하고, 이 같은 시민교육 프로젝트 수업이 민주시민교육에 대해 가지는 시사점을 논의하고자 했다. 결론적 으로, 본 연구는 학생들이 교과서 위주의 교실수업에서 얻기 힘든 몇 가지 교육적 성취( 연구계획의 수정, 교과서 밖의 시장 개념의 이해, 연구 렌즈의 초점 맞추기, 쟁점 현상의 이해 및 의사결정 수행)를 경험했다. 본 연구는 입시위주의 고등학교 환경 속에서 민주시민교육의 가능성과 한계를 동시에 발견할 수 있었으며, 이를 통해 지속가능한 민주시민교육의 정착 방안의 탐색을 제언하고자 한다.

This qualitative case study, as a part of a larger study of a multicultural citizenship education program implemented in a college preparatory school, attempted to analyze 8 students learning experiences who had participated in a project-based afterschool course called Advertizing Muhan Market , focusing on the phenomenon called gentrification . From August through early November, 2016, the researcher conducted partial participant observation in major activities, as well as in-depth interviews with teachers and students to identify educational achievements those students experienced and to discuss their implications for citizenship education in our schools. In sum, this study found several types of authentic learning experiences, but also detected potential limitations posed by the institutional cultures of college preparatory high schools in Korea. The findings suggest several implications for successful citizenship education in Korea’s high schools.
