지역역사지리학의 관점에서 본 ‘역사부평’의 문화경관과 지역 정체성

Cultural landscapes and Regional Identities of Historic Bupyeong from the Viewpoint of Regional Historical Geography

지역역사지리학(regional historical geography)이란 역사지리학의 하위 분야로서 어떤 지역(a region)을 매개로 그곳에서 전개된 자연과 인간의 관계, 지역적 맥락에서 이루어지는 환경과 문화와 역사의 연동 관계를 구명하려는 분야이다. 본 연구는 지역역사지리학의 관점에서 공간적으로는 부평 지역, 시간적으로는 전근대 시기, 달리 말해 소위 ‘역사부평’의 지역 정체성을 궁극적 도달점으로 설정하였다. 이를 위해 연구자는 여러 선행 연구를 토대로 지역역사지리학의 전통적인 주제들을 추출한 다음, 이를 부평 지역에 적용하여 다음과 같은 일곱 가지의 세부 테마들을 선정하였고 이들을 역사부평의 지역 정체성에 접근하기 위한 기본 내용 체계로 삼았다. 첫째, 지역의 정체성과 지역 이미지를 가장 함축적으로 담고 있는 대표 지명과 그 의미, 둘째, 부평의 치소 입지와 권력 공간의 구성, 셋째, 지역의 지리적 환경에 대한 인식과 인지, 넷째, 인문지리의 핵심 요인인 주요 사회집단과 인물(주요 성씨 집단과 배출 인물), 다섯째, 지역 경제의 단면을 알려주는 주된 생업 기반과 인구 분포, 여섯째, 지역문화를 표상하는 문화경관 및 상징적 장소들, 일곱째, 시간에 따른 지역의 변모과정을 엿볼 수 있는 경관 변화 및 지역구조의 변동이 그것이다. 본 연구는, 우리나라에서 한 지역을 대상으로 한 지역역사 지리학의 기본 내용 체계를 어떻게 구성할 것이며 구체적 서술 방식을 어떻게 전개할 것인지를 위한 유의미한 실험적 사례가 될 것으로 기대한다.

Regional historical geography is a subfield of historical geography. It is a field to investigate the relationship between nature and human having been developed there through a certain region, and the relationship among the environment, culture and history in the local context. In this study, the regional identities of so called historic Bupyeong , i.e. that of premodern Bupyeong, were set as the ultimate destination of study from the viewpoint of regional historical geography. To this end, the author extracted traditional major themes of regional historical geography based on several previous researches, then applied them to the historic Bupyeong, and selected seven themes as follows: first, the representative name and its meanings that represent the regional identities and regional image most implicitly; second, the composition of historic Bupyeong s location and composition of the space of power; third, the awareness and perception of geographical environment; fourth, the major social groups and figure(major genealogical groups and its great figures); fifth, the main employment base and population distribution; sixth, cultural landscapes and symbolic places representing local culture; seventh, the landscape changes and the dynamics of regional structure that would show the changing process of the region through time. These seven themes consists of the framework of concents to approach the regional(local) identities of historic Bupyeong. It is expected that this study would be an meaningful experimental example of how to construct the contents framework of regional historical geography and how to develop a specific narrative method to regional historical geographies in Korea.
