이 논문은 해방 이후 한국전쟁을 거치고 남·북이 분단되는 궤적을 따라서 인천의 도시정체성이 반공도시로 구축되어간 역사적 과정을 사회·문화사적 관점 아래 연구해본 것이다. 개항기와 식민지시대를 거치면서 한국의 국제 관문도시였던 인천은 한국전쟁을 거치면서 인적, 물적인 측면에서 혹독한 피해를 입었을 뿐만 아니라 국제적 냉전체제 아래 분단의 결절지대(結節地帶)로 변모하였다. 탈냉전시대가 도래한 지 대략 20년이 흘렀지만, 2005년 분출한 맥아더동상 철폐 논란과 2010년 인천 앞바다에서 발발한 천안함 침몰과 연평도 포격사건은 인천이 여전히 분단의 결절지대에 위치한 뿐만 아니라 적대적 이념대결의 도시정체성이 강제되고 있다는 점을 입증한다. 그러나 이와 동시에 탈냉전의 도래 이후 인천은 남·북간의 적대적 대결과 동북아의 전쟁위험을 극복하기 위해 평화도시로 재구축되어야 한다는 논의도 제기되고 있다. 바야흐로 지금 인천에서 반공도시와 평화도시의 도시정체성을 둘러싼 치열한 담론이 역사적 성찰 없이 충돌하고 있다. 이 논문은 분단시대 반공도시 인천의 도시표상을 보여주는 다양한 문자자료뿐만 아니라 시각자료를 적극 활용하려고 한다.
