아편굴의 조선인

Koreans in an opium den : the representation of an opium peddler in the Korean Novels at the colonial age

본고에서는 아편을 피우는 공간, 그 속에서 아편을 밀매하고 교환하는 사람들이 일제강점기 소설 속에서 어떤 의미와 가치로 재현되고 있는가를 분석하고자 한다. 우리나라에서 아편과 아편굴의 탐사를 다루는 글들은 20년대 이후 아편 중독자 문제가 본격적으로 불거지면서 등장한다. 아편굴은 몸을 망치는 공간으로서, 다양한 소설에서 범죄의 공간으로 그려진다. 당대 대부분의 지식인에게 있어 아편이나 아편굴은 ‘경험된’ 대상이 아니라 ‘상상된’ 대상으로, 그 속에서 느끼는 공포는 상상된 착취에 기반한다. 아편굴의 이미지는 부랑과 범죄에 대한 경멸과 이국적인 매혹의 거처로서 양가성을 띤다. 거주의 위협과 투기의 행운이 교차하는 양가적 공간으로서 만주는 하나의 거대한 아편굴이다. 만주라는 거대한 아편굴에 대한 상상은 일제강점기 소설에서 정주와 저항의 서사로 이원화한다. 안수길의 「토성」은 도시양복쟁이 투기꾼과 만주 개척농민의 대조를 서사화하지만 아편의 재배와 밀매가 모두 조선 이주민의 만주 정착과정에서 주요한 수단이 되었다는 점에서 그 차이는 무의미하다. 아편굴이 곳곳에 산재한 만주의 음험함에 대한 강조는 팽창하는 제국, 파시즘적 사회에 대한 저항의 의미를 갖기도 한다는 점에서 문제적이다. 아편굴의 조선인 여성 밀매업자의 형상은 김사량의 「향수」 등 40년대 다양한 서사 속에서 음험하고 폭력적인 이미지를 환기하는 가운데 저항의 가능성을 보여주는 것이다.

This study aims to analyse the representation of an opium den and an opium peddler in the Korean novels at the colonial age. The propriety articles about opium and an opium den appears after 1920s with serious proublem of an opium addict smoker. The oppium den is described as a corrupted criminal space in various novels. The opium and the opium den was not experienced but imagined thing to the contemporary mass, so their horror for the opium den was based on imagined exploitation. The image of an opium den has the ambivalence of the contempt space in which various crime and hoodlums emerged and the exotic fascinating space. Manchuria as the ambivalent space that cross the menace residence and the fortune of speculation was an enormous opiun den. This imagination of Manchuria shows divided narratives for residence and resistance in the novels at the colonial age. An, Su-gil s “A wall of earth” narrated the contrast between an urban suite speculator and a farmer cultivating Manchuria. But the contrast becomes nothing because all korean settlers cultivated and smuggled opium for their settlement. The image of Manchuria as an insidious space has some meaning that koreans opium peddlers resist to the Empire and the Fascism society. The representation of a woman korean opium peddler shows an insidious and violent image and so evokes some possibility for resistance to imperialism.
