『토지』와 만주 공간

Land and Manchuria : for literature education

박경리의 장편소설 『토지』는 고등학교 문학교육의 장에서 주요하게 다루는 우리 현대소설 가운데 하나이다. 우리는 이 논문에서 『토지』의 중심 배경 가운데 하나인 만주 공간의 다양한 의미를 살펴 『토지』를 더 깊이 이해함으로써 고등학교 문학교육에 이바지하고자 한다. 이 논문에서 『토지』의 배경 가운데 하나인 만주 공간의 지리적, 사회역사적 성격이 아니라 소설 속에서 서사의 전개와 함께 새롭게 생성되고 계속해서 변화하는 ‘의미’를 살피고자 하였다. 이 글에서 주목한 것은 ‘정치성의 공간’, ‘피난지 또는 이상의 공간’, ‘떠도는 나그네의 공간’, ‘소생과 희망의 공간’ 등이다. 『토지』의 만주 공간은 다양한 정치적 입장, 다양한 정치적 세력이 뒤엉켜 갈등하는 정치성의 공간인데 전체적으로 보아, 이 정치성의 공간으로서의 만주 공간에 대한 『토지』에서의 추구는 ‘일본의 침략/독립 운동’의 틀에서 크게 벗어나지는 않는다. 『토지』의 만주 공간은 또 대립, 갈등, 차별, 억압이 존재하지 않는 피난지 또는 이상의 공간이기도 한데 그 이상성은 현실의 추악성을 대비적으로 부각하는 기능을 갖고 있다. 『토지』의 만주 공간은 다른 한편 떠도는 나그네의 공간이다. 이런 의미를 지닌 만주 공간은 작품에서 천애유랑의 방랑길을 떠도는 외로운 영혼이 거쳐 가는 방랑지의 하나로서, 어쩔 수 없어 잠시 머무는 곳으로서, 자유의 존재성을 표상하는 기호로서 나타난다. 『토지』의 만주 공간은 소생과 희망의 공간이기도 한데, 기억을 기록하는 글쓰기(노동)의 힘에 대한 작가의 믿음이 만주 공간의 이 같은 의미를 열었다. 작품의 중심 무대 가운데 하나인 만주 공간의 이처럼 다양한 의미를 파악한다면 『토지』를 더 깊이 이해하는 데 도움이 될 것이고, 나아가 국어과 교과서에 『토지』를 수록하여 가르치는 고등학교 문학교육에 작으나마 도움이 될 수 있을 것이다.

In this article, I have surveyed the meaning of Manchuria in Land that is the novel of Park, Gyeung-ri. This meaning is not the nature of Manchuria but the meaning that is generating newly and newly in novel on the process of novel. That is the generation which is generated in the relation of character and the geological and social historical nature of Manchuria. The life and mind of characters and the geological and social historical nature of Manchuria are changing unceasingly, so the meaning of Manchuria in novel is changing unceasingly. Therefor the most important things are ‘generation’ and ‘change’. In this article, I have grasped the meaning of Manchuria in Land. Those are ‘space of politicity’, ‘space of refuge and ideal’, ‘space of floating wanderer’, ‘space of revive and hope’. The space of politicity means that the space of confliction between diverse political positions and groups. The space of refuge and ideal means that the space of utopia where does not exist discrimination, supression and so on. The space of floating wanderer means that the space of wanderer who are floating because of diverse causes. The space of revive and hope means that the space of revive from despair and hope in hopeless condition. The understanding of the spacial meaning of Manchuria can help the comprehension of Land character and give a help on highschool literature education in which Land is contained as a important korean modern novel.
