외국인 교환학생의 온라인과 오프라인 친구관계 형성에 대한 비교분석

The Comparative Analysis on the On-line and Off-line Friendship Formation among Foreign Exchange Students

본 논문은 지금까지 외국인 유학생 연구에서 비교적 소홀히 다루어졌던 유학생들 간 친구관계 형성의 특징을 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 특히 유학생들의 친구관계를 오프라인과 온라인 공간으로 나누어 각 공간에서의 특성을 비교분석했다. 이를 위해 수도권에 위치한 한 대학의 2013년 2학기 교환학생 프로그램에 참여했던 178명 전원을 대상으로 설문조사를 수행하였으며, 그들이 사용했던 페이스북 기록을 자료화하였다. 분석결과 우리나라에 유학 온 학생들 사이의 친구관계에서는 다음 3가지 특징이 발견되었다. 첫째, 오프라인에서 친구 사귀기에 적극적인 사람들은 일반적으로 온라인 공간에서도 친구 사귀기에 적극적이다. 둘째, 언어는 유학생들 간의 친구관계 형성에 있어 매우 중요한 역할을 하고 있는데, 특히 한국어를 잘 할수록 오프라인에서 다른 유학생들을 사귀는 데 적극적이었고, 반대로 한국어를 잘 못할수록 페이스북에서 친구 사귀기에 적극적이었다. 셋째, 중국학생들의 경우 오프라인에서의 친구 사귀기에는 소홀한 반면 페이스북에서의 친구 사귀기는 다른 지역 출신의 유학생들에 비해 매우 적극적이었다.

This paper aims to investigate the characteristics of friendship formation among foreign students, which has been barely dealt with in the studies of international student’s friendship. In particular, it divides the venues of friendships into two spaces, i.e., on- and off-line, and compares the features of friendship formations in each space. The data were collected from 178 foreign students who participated in the exchange student program in fall 2013, organized by a university located at Seoul metropolitan area. For off-line friendship, a survey has been carried out in order to gather student’s attributes and friendship networks. For on-line friendship, student’s Facebook friendships and activities have been garnered. The analyses of these data reveal the following three. First, foreign students who actively make friends in off-line space are also likely to actively make friends at Facebook. Second, languages are playing a crucial role in forming friendship networks among international students. Especially, those who cannot speak Korean very well tend to more actively make friends at Facebook while those who speak excellent Korean tend to aggressively make other international student friends at off-line. Lastly, Chinese students are active in making Facebook friends while reluctant to make off-line friends.
