Many scholars think the reign of the Emperor Theophilos was a turning-point in the history of the Byzantine Empire. There are many different reasons for such an evaluation. I looked for the meaning of the Arab-Byzantine wars in two different time periods, 830-833 and 837-838. Throughout the 830s, Theophilos launched a series of campaigns against the Caliphate. These were only moderately successful, but sufficient for the imperial propaganda to portray Theophilos in the traditional Roman manner as a “victorious emperor.” In response, al-Muʿtasim launched a major punitive expedition against Byzantium, aiming to capture the two major Byzantine cities of central Anatolia, Ancyra and Amorion in 838, and sacked the city of Amorion. What is the meaning of the Arab-Byzantine wars in the 830s? The wars made the Byzantines form a core part of horse-archers, and take the offensive against the Caliphate. Despite the victory of 838, the military power of the Arabs declined on account of the failed revolt by Abbās ibn al-Ma’mun.
