This study reveals the status of Korean Halal meat supply chain (KHMSC). According to this study, Halal meats distributed in Korea are mainly local halal chicken meat, imported halal chicken meat and imported halal beef. As a non-Muslim country, Korea has so far no halal slaughterhouse. As a result, local halal chicken meat is produced by local wholesalers who rent slaughterhouse for hours hiring Muslim slaughter men. The packaged meat claims “Halal assured.” Under this circumstance, consumers may lose confidence in halal food. There are two key uncontrollable factors for this rented slaughtering. First, the breeding of animals to be slaughtered is not known. Second, segregation between slaughtering halal animal and non-halal animal is not guaranteed, which might result in haram, or non-halal contamination. Korea might learn from Australia where halal assurance program (AGAHP) is implemented by the government. The most urgent task is to establish a halal dedicated slaughterhouse in Korea.
