This paper aims to conduct a study on the current state of research on the halal industry in Korea. With the inauguration of the Lee Myung Bak administration in 2008, Korea began to pay serious attention to Islamic finance and the halal industry. According to the Thomson Reuters report (2016-2017), the global Islamic market size in 2021 is estimated to be $3.5 trillion in the financial sector, and $3 trillion in non-financial sectors such as halal food and fashion, travel, media and recreation, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. Korea shares only 0.1% of the food in the halal market. Currently, research on Korea’s halal industry is mainly concerned with the halal certificate system and marketing. It needs to expand into legal and theoretical analyses on halal-related issues in Islam. In particular, for more systematic studies of halal-related subjects, comprehensive research should be done involving medicine, pharmacology, oriental pharmacy, food and nutrition, business administration, chemistry, law, and Islamic studies. To achieve this, Korea needs to establish university-based halal research institutes and departments run by private companies and academics, and strongly supported by the Korean government.
