여성주체의 이중성으로 본 여성성장의 일면

An Aspect of Woman’s Growth From the Perspective of Female Subject’s Duality - Focused on Chi Li’s The Lingering of Water and Fire(水與火的缠绵)

본고는 츠리(池莉)의 《물과 불의 혼재(水與火的缠绵)》를 대상으로 하여, 여성성장의 일면에 대해 고찰해보고자 한 것이다. 《水與火的缠绵》은 청망망(曾芒芒)이라는 한 여성의 연애와 결혼 및 떠남에 관한 서사로, 청년기부터 결혼 이후까지의 여성성장의 노정을 담아내고 있다. 이를 통해 츠리는 여성의 성장에 대해 다음과 같은 두 가지 내용을 제시하고 있다. 하나는 여성의 성장이란 가부장제에서 규범화된 몰((mole)적 존재에서 분자적 존재로 나아가는 과정이라는 것이다. 즉, 가부장제에서 규범화된 여성다움에서 벗어나 개별화된 여성 ‘자신’으로서 정체성을 구성해가는 것이다. 다른 하나는 이러한 성장 여정에 작용하는 여성주체의 이중성이다. 츠리는 가부장제 여성다움을 내면화한 청망망이라는 여성주체 안에 내포된 두 개의 주체를 발견한다. 작품 제목이 암시하는 ‘水(순응하는 정주적 주체)’와 ‘火(탈주하는 유목적 주체)’가 그것이다. 츠리가 보기에, 여성의 성장은 바로 이 ‘水-정주적 주체’와 ‘火-유목적 주체’가 끊임없이 부딪히고 교차하며 부침(浮沈)하는 과정이다. 중요한 것은 정주적 주체와 유목적 주체가 갈등하면서 어느 하나가 현현(顯現)하는 순간 다른 하나가 완전히 거세되거나 은폐되는 것이 아니라, 서로를 놓지 못하고 여전히 엉켜있다는 데 있다. 그 결과 한 주체에서 또 다른 주체로 끊임없이 이행과 반전과 전이를 거듭하는 것이다. 이것이야말로 츠리가 포착한 여성성장의 곤혹이며 특징일 것이다.

The present study is aimed to examine an aspect of woman s growth through Chi Li s ‘The Lingering of Water and Fire’. ‘The Lingering of Water and Fire’ is an epic story of romance, marriage and separation of a woman named ‘Ceng mang mang(曾芒芒)’. The story describes the courses of female growth from adolescence to post-marriage. With the story, Chi Li points out two regarding female growth as follows. One is the course in which a woman grows from an existence of a normative ‘mole’ under patriarchal system to a molecular existence. In other words, it is a route to compose ‘one’s own’ identify as individualized woman escaping from normative femininity in patriarchy. The other is the duality of female subject that affects the course of female growth. Chi Li finds two subjects in the female subject ‘Ceng mang mang’ whose patriarchal femininity is internalized. They are ‘a residental subject of settlement’ and ‘a nomadic subject of escape’. In Chi Li s opinion, a woman grows through endless conflict, alternation, and integration of the residental subject and the nomadic subject. What is important in the course is that the moment they are integrated to one of them through conflict, the other does not vanish or sealed off, but they still continue carrying on, turning over each other, and metastasizing. It is here where Chi Li captured the confusion and distinction of female growth.
