여항문인 申光絢이 기록한 19세기의 풍속과 노래

The 19 th Century’s Customs and Songs Recorded by Shin Gwnag-hyeon, a Jungin-Class Literary Man

이 글은 19세기 여항문인 신광현이 정지윤·조수삼·조희룡 등에 견주어, 독특한 시각을 가지고 민간 풍속을 포착하고 기록하였다는 점에 주목하였 다. 신광현은 기존체제의 언어와 관습과 다른 시각에서 당대의 풍속과 인간을 기술했다. 특히 그는 민간의 구어문화에서 발원하는 속담·노래·이야기 등에 주로 초점을 맞췄다. 그 결과 향촌의 創聞異蹟이 새롭게 의미가 부여 되었고, 또 ｢시집살이 노래｣와 같은 여성의 질고를 표현한 우리말 노래들이 정밀하게 한역되기도 했다. 신광현은 민간의 노래를 한역하고 해설하면서 ‘採風君子’라는 표현을 썼는데, 이는 스스로를 지칭하는 말이었다. 신광현이 시정의 노래를 채록하는 시선에는 경세적 의도가 개입되어 있지 않았다. 조수삼이 󰡔추재기이󰡕를 쓰는 태도에는 기록자[혹은 채록자]와 시정 풍속 간에 일정한 위계와 거리가 존재했다. 그러나 신광현이 당대 풍속을 기술할 때에는 이러한 위계와 거리감이 존재하지 않았다. 신광현이 세간의 풍속과 街談巷語를 진지한 자세로 채록하고 거기에 의미를 부여하는 방향으로만 나아간 것은 아니었다. 민간 풍속을 바라보는 신광현의 관찰과 시선은 산만하고 무질서한 모습을 띠기도 하였다. 그리하여 경중을 고려하지 않은 만화경적 나열이 유발되기도 했다.

This paper pays attention to the fact that Shin Gwang-hyeon, a Jungin-class literary man in the 19 th century took notice on and documented folk customs from a unique perspective in contrast to the existing customs. In particular, Shin took novel notice on proverbs, songs, and stories originating from oral folk culture. As a result, folk customs and stories were newly lifted. Also, Korean songs expressing female fetters like Sijpsari Norae were translated into Classic Chinese. Shin used the expression Chae Pung Gunja, an ‘intellectual who translates folk songs into Classic Chinese, explains them, and collects folk customs, which referred to him. There was no intervention of his enlightening will in his perspective from which he collected folk songs. In Jo Su-sam’s attitude with which he wrote Chu Jae Gi-I, a certain hierarchy and distance existed between the recorder (or a collector) and common customs. There however were no such hierarchy and distance in Shin’s description of customs at that time. Shin Gwang-hyeon however did not go in the direction in which he collected worldly customs and folk proverbs and songs seriously and assigned meanings to them. His observation of and look at folk customs were often loose and disordered in a sense. He thus just made a kaleidoscopic list of things without considering their relative weights.
