In this study, a series of settling tests have been conducted on either salt or tap water conditions using a settling column, in order to estimate settling properties of kaolinite sediments and analyze the salinity effects on the sediment settling. Results from settling tests show that the settling velocities of kaolinite on salt water in a flocculated settling region are approximately two times higher than those in tap water, while in a hindered settling region their velocities show the directly opposite trends. These characteristic features are found to be due to the effects of particle aggregation by salinity.
