Characteristics of Multi-functional·flexible Design in Small-scale Residential Spaces for Single-person Households

The purpose of this study was to analyze the types and characteristics of furniture design in small-scale residential spaces for single-person households. A case study was used for analyzing and classifying characteristics of form and function in single-serve furniture available in the open market(G Market) in 2015. Findings of study were as follows: firstly, the three types of multi-functional·flexible furniture design for single-person households were the fixed, folding and extendable. Secondly, most of beds and dining tables had multi-functionality by combination of storage spaces and tables using below spaces of those furnitures. Thirdly, the flexibility of one-serve furnitures was divided into aspects; folding, sliding and extension for the creation of extra spaces and multi-purpose spaces. This study shows that the multi-functionality and flexibility reflected furnitures can efficiently use for single-person households in the small residential spaces.
