This article is about Odyssey High School, which was established by the Office of Education-Seoul in cooperation with uncertified alternative schools as an experimental public alternative school in 2015. Forty 1st graders of high schools in Seoul were enrolled with Odyssey School and participated in three cooperating alternative schools for 7 months. Programs provided by these schools include performing arts, film-making, and music in addition to their basic humanity courses such as reading, writing, and dialogues that are aimed to promote critical and reflective ways of thinking. Parents sending their children to Odyssey High School indicate that Korean parents notoriously known for their excessively demanding attitudes toward children’s instrumentalized learning as the status quo are changing. The present study is intended to highlight them as subjects of education in comparison with consumers of education. Those parents who have been conspicuously extravagant with marketized education are not simply excessively demanding but are ‘backward’ in the era of 1% of ‘elites’ governing the 99% as long as the current system maintains. The goal of becoming part of the 1% is not something achieved but given as evidenced in the popular sarcasm of ‘silver-spooned vs. mud-spooned’ in Korea. These parents who penetrate the context in which their children are situated and provide them with critical and reflective education within the frame of public alternative schooling, rather than supporting them to be as competitive as the silver-spooned, deserve attention because they are the ones who challenge the conventional way of instrumentalized learning in Korea, with which the academia in Korea has hardly intervened.
