Pup unghyangch apo(Writings on local tea of Pup’ung), is a book of tea written by Yi Un-Hae(1710-?) in either 1755 or 1756. This volume precedes Yi TŏkRi’s Tongtaki (Records of tea on the East side) by fifty years, and the Buddhist monk Ch’oŭi’s Tongtasong (Enchanting tea on the East side) by eighty years. Pup unghyangch apo is controversial in nature, as it touches upon a wide range of topics on teas, such as the discernment and knowledge of intellectuals in the eighteenth century, manufacturing methods based on Ttŏkch’a’ (tea bricks), medical applications, and the standardization of all the different varieties of tea sets, etc. The main body, following on from the introduction, consists of four categories: ‘the Origin of tea’, ‘the name of tea’, ‘manufacturing methods’ and ‘tea utensils’. Pup unghyangch apo showcases the development procedure of each of the seven kinds of flavored teas, which promotes the medicinal effects for specific symptoms whilst imposing the real place name ‘Pup’ung’ in late-Chosŏn’s tea culture.
