A Study on the Plan of Design Education in Practical Arts

The purpose of this study was to find the plan to improve the design education which was able to execute it systematically and practically in elementary practical arts. For achieving the purpose of this study, it inquired into the theory about elementary design education, analyzed the contents about design education shown in practical arts textbook, and investigated the current status about design education of practical arts in elementary schools. For analyzing the contents about design education, the contents were grouped into aestheticㆍsymbolic expression area, usefulㆍfunctional performance area, scientificㆍtechnological application area, and socialㆍemotional attitude area. For the questionnaire in elementary schools, subjects are 165 charge teachers of the 5th and 6th grade in Daegu. The method of this survey has been through the arbitrary-chosen questionnaire. Results of this study were as follows: 1. Contents about design education in practical arts textbook focus more on estheticㆍ symbolic expression area and usefulㆍfunctional performance area than other areas. Scientificㆍtechnological application area have smaller proportion in practical arts. Therefore, contents about scientificㆍtechnological application area are necessary to put into practical arts textbook more and more. 2. It is necessary to supplement for the working process because teachers cannot enough to understand about the working process of products, when they teach the making and decorating in class. 3. It is necessary to use the educational media positively, to develop the design materials for teaching the making and decorating. 4. Considering the creativity extension of students, it is necessary to improve following products of textbook alike. 5. For activating design education in practical arts, it has to equip with the facilities and tools for practical arts instruction, has to expand the charge teacher for practical arts gradually, has to study for improving the quality of practical arts teacher, and needs to develop the reference books for design education in practical arts.
