A Reconsideration of Man and Woman s Love in Yee Ok s Literature

이옥은 문학을 재밋거리로 향유한 작가로, 그의 정문학론(情文學論)에서 문학의 가장 좋은 소재는 ‘남녀지정’이라고 말하였다. 그런데 문제는, 이옥이 이 정문학론을 명나라 말기 양명학 좌파 문인들에게서 취했지만, 그 새로운 문학론을 지지할 수 있는 철학적 근거는 수용하지 않은 점이다. 그래서 자극적이고 기이한 남녀지정을 즐겨 다루면서도 성리학적인 여성관에 기반하고 있는 열녀담을 다룰 수 있었으며, 파격적인 남녀 간 사랑을 절절하게 서사해 놓고 그 내용과는 이반하는 후평을 반복할 수 있었다. 이옥은 자유분방한 문인이면서도 여성에 관해서는 남성 중심적인 시각에서 한 발짝도 벗어나지 않았기에, 파격적인 남녀 간의 기정(奇情)에 남성의 욕망을 투사해, 여성을 조롱하기도 하고·찬양하기도 했으며·폭력적인 시각으로 형상하고 비웃을 수도 있었다. 나이든 여성의 몸을 물러터져 먹을 수 없는 과일로 비유해 조롱하는가 하면, 기녀가 자신의 성을 매개로 남성에게 헌신·희생하여 정사(情死)한 것을 의협하다고 찬양하였고, 여성이 당한 참혹한 폭력을 서사한 탄원서를 『시경』 시를 집구해 개작하면서 포복절도할만하다며 웃음거리로 삼을 수도 있었다. 그의 후평(後評)은 서사의 내용을 배반하면서, 여성의 몸에 남성의 욕망을 투사하여 즐기고/조롱하거나, 즐기고/남성 중심 시각으로 평가하는 것이 기본 틀이었다. 이옥은 자유롭고 분방하며 문학적 역량이 탁월한 작가로, 파격적인 기정을 다뤘지만, 그에 걸맞은 세계관을 습득하지 못한 나머지, 여성의 곤경을 재밋거리로 수용할 수 있었다. 이렇듯이 이옥은 일부 연구자들이 말한 바처럼 여성정감을 가지고 여성을 연민한 작가가 아니라 여성의 몸을 남성 중심적인 시각에서 즐기는 것에 치우쳤던 통속적인 작가였다.

Yee Ok consumed his literature as pleasure. He thought that a superb theme in his literature was love between man and Woman. But it s problematic fact that Yee Ok secured his literary theory on love from writers in the left faction of Yang-ming philosophy of the Ming dynasty, but he didn t accept philosophic bases to support his new theory of literature. Therefore, he was capable of dealing with a story of a virtuous woman, though he enjoyed provocative and weird stories about a love story between man and woman, which were based upon a view of woman from Sung Confucianism. Though he sincerely depicted the exceptional love between man and woman. he was able to repeat his post-assessment different from it. Since he was unable to escape from his man-centered viewpoint as a liberal writer, he ridiculed or admired a woman, and could laugh at a woman, depending on his violent viewpoint and projecting manly desire on weird love between man and woman. He scoffed at a woman by comparing a old woman to an inedible fruit. Also. he praised a kisaeng as chivalrous when she committed a double suicide, contributing her sexual attribute to a man. Also, by rewriting a petition, which depicted merciless violence a woman suffered from, into a pornographic one, he made it so ridiculous as to be convulsed with laughter. Betraying described contents in his post-assessment and projecting a man s desire into a woman s body, he made it a basic literary strategy to enjoy/ridicule a woman, or enjoy/assess a woman through a man-centered viewpoint. Although Lee Ok was a liberal writer whose literary capability was prominent, he didn t secure a view of world and was so immoral as to make a woman s predicament a pornograph. As some researchers said, Yee Ok didn t feel pity for a woman with a woman s emotion, but was a secular writer to be so biased as to consume a woman s body as a pleasure from his man-centered viewpoint.
