A Study on Hanjosamsunggibong - A Revenge Narrative Without a Revenger’s Will

<한조삼성기봉>은 <옥환기봉>의 여성 인물인 곽후의 해원(解寃)을 목적으로 하는 복수담이다. <한조삼성기봉>에서 곽후는 남편인 광무제와 성별을 바꾸어 태어나 다시 부부가 되며, 자신이 전생에 받았던 감정적 상처를 환생한 광무제에게 그대로 돌려준다. 이때 주목할 점은 곽후의 현신인 강왕이 곽후의 복수를 성취하는 주체이나, 그의 선택과 행동이 광무제의 현신인 조수아에 대한 복수 의지에서 비롯되지 않는다는 점이다. 복수 주체인 강왕에게 적극적인 복수 의지가 없는 채로도 복수가 완성될 수 있었던 까닭은 이 소설이 성별 전환 설정을 도입하면서도 기존의 젠더 위계에 편승하는 전략을 취하였기 때문이다. 이렇듯 내용적으로는 여성이 주체가 되는 복수가 형식적으로는 남성에 의해 성취되는 굴절은 <한조삼성기봉>의 두 가지 서사원리와 관련된다. 첫 번째 원리는 권1의 전반부를 제외한 대부분의 서사에서 적용되는 ‘표면원리’이다. 표면원리에 따라 진행되는 서사에서 강왕, 조수아, 위옥희 등의 남녀 인물들은 서사 내에서 여성 혹은 남성이라면 마땅히 수행하도록 기대되는 역할을 수행함으로써 전형적이고 보편적인 서사를 완성한다. 두 번째 원리는 권1의 전반부에만 해당하는 듯하지만 사실상 권14까지의 서사 전개를 관통하는 ‘이면원리’이다. 이면원리는 인물들의 환생 내력을 환기함으로써, 표면원리에 따른 서사의 전개를 곽후의 복수가 성취되는 과정으로 재의미화 한다. 특히 남성 인물인 강왕에게 ‘남편에 대한 복수심에 찬 곽후’라는 여성 인물의 전사(前史)가 겹쳐지게 됨으로써 강왕이라는 인물에 대한 인식에 균열이 발생하게 된다. <한조삼성기봉>은 첫째, 인물들 개개의 선악보다는 인물들의 배후에 존재하는 젠더 구조를 의식하게 하며, 둘째, 이면원리가 표면원리에 개입하여 전형적인 인물 설정과 서사 전개에 대한 인식에 균열을 가한다는 점에서, 기존의 고전소설들에 대하여 반정립으로서의 의미를 지니는 문제적 소설이다.

The purpose of this paper is to suggest a new understanding ofHanjosamsunggibong (漢朝三姓奇逢) by analyzing the relationship between the aim of the narrative and the methods adopted to achieve it. Hanjosamsunggibongis a Korean Old Novel borrowing characters from the original novel,Okhwangibong (玉環奇逢).However, it starts from the scene in which two characters’ sexes (性別) are changed. The husband and wife, who become female and male, respectively, are reborn and become wife and husband again. The aim of this reincarnation is to provide Queen Kwak (the female character fromOkhwangibong) revenge against her husband, Emperor Mujae (the male character fromOkhwangibong), by giving him the same amount of pain that she endured in her previous life. However, after Queen Kwak is reborn as King Kang and Emperor Mujae is reborn as Queen Cho, King Kang does not show a strong will for vengeance against Queen Cho. Regardless of this, King Kang achieves Queen Kwak’s revenge. Being reborn as male provides King Kang the circumstances through which he can exercise his own rights and use his rightful power as a patriarch. It could even be stated that the revenge is achieved in the first scene where the couple’s sexes are changed. InHanjosamsunggibong,Queen Kwak achieves revenge by becoming a man . The aim is to achieve a wife’s revenge against her husband, but paradoxically, gender inequality is used to produce another example of a patriarchal narrative. Nevertheless, the narrator keeps reminding the reader of the history of reincarnation, emphasizing that this narrative, superficially a male exercising authority over a female, is actually the process of achieving a female’s revenge from the perspective of Queen Kwak. This means that whatHanjosamsunggibongaimed to achieve could not be expressed directly in the late Joseon dynasty. Therefore, this kind of distortion, the retaliatory spirit of a female being conveyed by a male, is found in Hanjosamsunggibong.
