화서학파의 여성인식

Hwaseohakpa s(華西學派) cognition about women-Through Myeonam Ik Hyun Choi(勉庵 崔益鉉)

본 논문은 한말 화서학파를 대표하는 인물인 면암 최익현의 여성 인식을 살펴보기 위해 작성되었다. 최익현은 여성 인물을 대상으로 한 35여 편의 글을 남겼는데, 양식상으로는 지인의 묘지명, 묘표, 행장 등의 비지문과 전장문이 가장 많고 내용상으로는 열녀와 효부를 다룬 글이 대다수를 차지한다. 그는 지인의 어머니를 대상으로 한 글을 작성한 경우, 어머니라는 여성 자체에 대한 관심보다는 그 어머니의 아들에 대해 관심을 더 보이며 여성은 훌륭한 아들을 통해 드러날 수 있다는 생각을 드러내고 있다. 최익현이 기록한 열녀는 주로 죽음을 수반한 여성이었고 그러한 여성을 가장 높이 평가했는데, 이는 당대 다른 유교 지식인들이 가부장이 부재한 상황에서 가부장의 공백을 메우며 가정을 돌본 여성의 행위를 열행이라고 인정한 것과 구별된다. 최익현은 열행 못지않게 효행을 중시하여 효열부를 다수 형상화하였는데 그에게 효열행은 목숨과 자식을 희생해서라도 지켜야하는 절대적인 가치로 인식되었다. 열행과 효열행이 쇠퇴한 풍속의 교화에 도움을 준다는 효용성에 대해서는 별다른 차이를 보이고 있지 않지만 효열행은 천리가 구현된 것으로 인식함으로써 열행 보다 높이 평가하고 있다. 최익현의 여성에 대한 인식은 전통 유교 사상에 입각한, 경색되고 보수적인 면모를 드러내기도 한다. 하지만 전통과 근대가 혼거하며 인식 체계를 교란하는 시기에 살던 구여성들이 정체성을 찾는데 영향을 주기도 하였다. 구여성은 당시를 선/악의 대결로 인식했던 개화파 지식인과 정/사로 구별했던 유교 지식인의 경직된 사고를 조화롭게 수용하는 유연하고 성숙한 모습을 보인다. 최익현의 여성 인식을 통해 신여성, 개화파 지식인 중심의 편향된 연구에 도움이 되기를 기대한다.

This thesis looks into Ikhyeon Choi s cognition about women, who is the representative of Hwaseohakpa in the last Chosun century. Ik Hyun Choi wrote 35 writings about women, stylistically most of those are Bijimun and Jeonjangmun such as acquaintance s epitaph, grave mark, Haengjang and contently most of those are about virtuous women and devoted daughter in law. When he wrote about his acquaintance s mother, he focused more on mother s child rather than mother itself to show the role of mother who raise a great son. Ik Hyun Choi s writings about virtuous women was mainly about women with death whom he assessed best, which distincts with other confucianism intellects approving women to look after home and family in the absence of patriarchal calling it ’pure patriarchal‘. Ik Hyun considered filial behavior as important as virtuous behavior and wrote a lot about filial behaviors. To him, filial behaviors were perceived as an absolute value to be protected even at the cost of life and children. Ik Hyun s cognition about women sometimes shows stagnate and conservative aspect. But his conventional perception influenced women damaged by social changes such as widow s remarriage which was brought up by other Enlightenment party intellects. I hope Hwaseohakpa intellect s perception about women to be of help to biased research on modern women and civilization.
