Traditional (Korean) music reflects Korean people s spirit which must be cherished as a precious national heritage. It also is one of good attractions to foreign visitors so that it can contribute to improving national economy. Therefore it should be an opportunity to invigorate disappearing traditional music as well as to make money. But it is not so easy. In the course of commercializing folk arts for the purpose of attracting tourists, the arts may lose their authentic values. As a result of it, the phenomenon so-called tourism destroys tourism itself can be happened in this cultural arts, as well as in natural resources. Commercialization of traditional arts may prevent artists from enhancing their creativeness. Relationship between traditional music and tourism must not be understood from just single point of view. Two different problems, that is retainment of originality and artistic quality, and production of tourist income in commercializing the music, must be solved. In order to run after two hares , constant efforts to develop and study traditional music have to be harmonious with its circumspect commercialization. Don t forget to remember that our traditional music become fossilized, and ultimately its value as one of tourism attractions is lost, if only we accept money precedes all policy dealing with two problems. 1994 is the 600th anniversary of founding Seoul, and Visit Korea Year . Also this year is the Year of Traditional Korean Music . It is needless to say that this year is very good chance to promote inbound tourism, and to give good images to visitors from all over the world. The world is in cultural war . Now is time fot us to do our best in making advance of Korean traditional culture, and in intemational-izing it. Hope to see real internationalization in fields, culture, arts, tourism, people s consciousness (world citizenship).
